Kamakhya Temple

The temple of Kamakhya is situated in the Indian city of Gauhati. This temple situated on the hillock called Nilanchal (Blue mountain) is supposed to be seat of Tantrik culture in India.
Getting there:
Air - Closest airport is Gauhati. Get the bus to Gauhati City. Stop enroute to the city at Kamakhya gate. Hop into the share taxi to get to the temple. Buses are available from Kamakhya gate but are infrequent . I would not suggest waiting for them.
Train - Kamakhya Station (Formerly called Malegaon Station) is the best option. Taxi costs Rs.200 to the temple.
Bus - Most long distance buses terminate at Paltan Bazar in Gauhati. From there get bus to Kamakhya gate. From the gate get the share taxi's to the temple. There are direct government buses from Paltan Bazar.

Main festival:

Ambubhaji, which falls around mid-June, is the main festival. it is believed that the festival, the main deity, Maa Kmakhya (Mother Kamakhya) undergoes her annual menstrual cycle.During this time the hillock gets overcrowded with lay people and holy men. There are holy men who live in seclusion for the whole year but come out for this 4 day festival. If you are planning to come here for the festival, book rooms in advance and be prepared to shell out alot of money for it. Also be prepared to face the flood of humanity and not-so-suitable sanitary conditions.
