Mizoram

Mizoram

Mizoram lies on the eastern edge of India.  It is an oasis of tranquility in a region troubled by insurgency and regionalism. Mizoram is totally safe for tourists and Mizo's are among the friendliest I’ve met. Tourist infrastructure is few and far between. Ideal for backpacking.  Mizoram is almost totally mountainous. The picture above shows clouds lifting over the capital city of Aizawal

Aizwal airport
Getting there:

By avion: The ideal way to get to Mizoram is to fly into Aizawal airport. The airport has a unique old world charm about it. In the monsoon season flights are frequently cancelled. Aizawal is one hour away from the airstrip.
By Road: There are share taxi's that ply to Calcutta through Assam and these can take up to two days. I do not recommend it.

Permit: Permits are required to visit Mizoram, even for Indian nationals. I flew into Aizwal airport.  Permits are issued at the airport and the procedure takes about 15 minutes.

Things to do
  • Khaungchera cave. If you are in Mizoram only for a day, I would recommend this adventure.
  • Model village in Reiek
  • Go to Myanmar
  • Visit Vangtung waterfall. This is the biggest waterfall in Mizoram
  • Sample local bamboo handicrafts
  • Visit winery at Champai
