The 64 Yogini temple (Chausath Yogini temple) at Bhadeghat is a simple structure with an entrance doorway. At present one can enter it only from the south-west door. The temple consists of a circular enclosure with pillars and an about 2 meter wide roof. A sculpture is installed between every pair of pillars)
The temple was built in the 2nd half of the 10th century. In its original form, it was only a circular enclosure. The roof and pillars were added perhaps in the 12th century. Yogini worship developed in the medieval period from the Cult of the Mothers. In the ancient period, the Mothers are believed tp have numbered 7,8 or 9. Later on, the number increased to 64 or 84.
The chief propagator of Yogini worship is believed to be the Guru Matsyendranatha. He established the Yogini Kaula Cult. In fact, the Yoginis are related to the Shakta tradition. According to old texts they can revive the dead. They have a terrifying appearance, but the also help
